Pros and Cons of Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is one of the most popular siding materials in America. If you want to prolong the useful life of your exterior walls, or just want to change the look of your home but don't want to paint it, vinyl siding could be for you. There are, however, a number of factors to consider when making your choice, such as color, type of grain and thickness. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Inexpensive

    • Vinyl siding is the least expensive of all types of siding. What's more, owing to the competitive nature of the growing vinyl siding industry, you can often get a few free extras, such as gutters or window casing, included.

    Durability

    • Vinyl siding is extremely durable compared to other types of siding. It never needs painting, doesn't show scratches, doesn't dent, peel or rot, and is not affected by snow, salt, cold or rain.

    Easy Maintenance

    • The only maintenance needed is an annual wash with a power hose and perhaps re-caulk for the joints in the event of a moisture problem.

    Carcinogenic

    • PVC, the material from which vinyl siding is made, is believed to cause cancer in humans. While it is safe to have it installed on exterior walls, emissions produced during the manufacturing process present potential cancer-causing dangers and harm to the environment. There is also the possibility of toxic fumes in the event of a house fire.

    Flammability

    • Despite its durability, vinyl siding is more susceptible to direct heat than other types of siding. Barbecues, oil lamps and any other heat sources should be kept a safe distance away to prevent the heat from melting the vinyl.

    Moisture Damage

    • When moisture gets trapped under the vinyl siding, it leaves the underlying wall surface vulnerable to mold and mildew. Hail and strong winds can also cause damage to this type of siding.

    Choice Limitations

    • Whilst there are plenty of choices of color and finish, you cannot paint or otherwise change the color of vinyl siding once your choice is made.
