Low Blood Sugar Level Symptoms

Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar levels drop to very low levels. Because your body needs glucose (sugar) to function, this condition can be life-threatening. Brain damage, coma and even death can result if blood sugar levels are not increased quickly. Because action must be taken quickly, knowing the symptoms to watch for could save a life.

  1. Nervousness

    • To make up for the lack of blood sugar available for energy, the body releases large amounts of adrenaline into the body. The adrenaline "amps up" your body and makes you feel nervous and jittery. It can also cause your heart to race.

    Intense Hunger

    • Your body needs glucose, so it starts sending out powerful signals to get you to eat food. Unfortunately, the hunger may be dampened by nausea, which is another side effect of the adrenaline.

    Dizziness

    • When blood sugar levels are low, the brain is one of the first organs to be hit by the consequences. Not only may you feel dizzy but you may have problems with any type of coordination.

    Drowsiness

    • Glucose is your body's primary source of energy. Without it, you're going to feel exhausted. Even once your levels return to normal, you may still feel tired for hours afterward.

    Loss of Consciousness

    • If your blood sugar levels drop below 40 mg/dL, you could lose consciousness. You'll be unable to respond verbally or physically to people trying to help you. If it is not treated immediately, the patient could go into a coma or die.
