Bones, muscles and tendons at joint areas of the body are cushioned by a fluid-filled sac call the bursa, which can become irritated and inflamed. The result is a painful condition known as bursitis. Recognizing the symptoms of bursitis early on is key to successful treatment and avoiding severe pain.

    Areas of Concern

  1. The bursa, which cushion and protect, are located near joints in your body. Shoulders, elbows, hips and knees are common areas of concern.
  2. Identification

  3. Any excessive strain, overuse or repetitive motion has the potential of resulting in bursitis. In some cases, bursitis is a symptom of another medical issue, such as arthritis or a sports injury.
  4. Symptoms

  5. Bursitis can be extremely painful, especially if left untreated or if the cause of the inflammation is not easily determined. Tenderness in the affected area is usually an early sign, progressing to more severe pain and limited mobility.
  6. Types

  7. Bursitis can be classified as either acute or chronic in nature. Acute bursitis occurs rather suddenly and is usually quite intense, while chronic bursitis is an ongoing condition that may require medical treatment and pain management.
  8. Expert Insight

  9. According to the Mayo Clinic online, bursitis can often be treated effectively at home (see Resources).
  10. Warning

  11. Always seek medical advise for an accurate diagnosis and medical treatment plan.
