About Constipation in Kittens

Constipation is a common problem in nursing kittens, although it can also affect older kittens. Constipation in kittens is much the same as in humans. The feces are too hard to pass, even though they are often smaller than normal. Normal kitten feces look like brown or black toothpaste. A healthy kitten defecates once or twice a day.

  1. Symptoms

    • The kitten may strain without producing any stool. The abdomen may be swollen, and the kitten will not want you to touch it.

    Treatment: Oral Medication

    • Kittens can be given the same milk of magnesia that people take. You have give it to the kitten by eyedropper or pipette. The dosage is 3 ccs per ounce of weight of the kitten. If you do not know the kitten's weight, don't give the medicine.

    Treatment: Soothing the Anal Region

    • The kitten's anus will be painful. Smearing a little petroleum jelly on the anus will help soothe soreness. Don't worry if the kitten licks it.

    Orphans

    • If you are raising orphaned kittens, you must help prevent constipation. After giving the kittens a feeding, rub their anuses with a cotton ball soaked in warm (not hot) water. They should urinate and defecate immediately.

    Warning

    • A kitten can die of phosphorus poisoning if it does not defecate at least once every 48 hours. If a kitten is still constipated after using these home remedies, call a veterinarian at once.
