Dangers of Smoking During Pregnancy

Many people wonder about the dangers of smoking during pregnancy. Smoking can affect the growing fetus and result in serious life-long health issues for the baby. In the worst case scenario, smoking during pregnancy can take the life of the baby.

  1. ADHD

    • Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk that the baby will develop attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which causes the child to have difficulty focusing and controlling his impulses.

    Asthma

    • Smoking while pregnant doubles the risk of the baby developing asthma. Asthma is a chronic condition in which the child's airways are obstructed, making it difficult for the child to breathe.

    Heart Defects

    • Cigarette smoking has been linked to congenial heart defects in the baby. The heavier the smoker, the greater the risk of the baby developing heart defects.

    Low Birthweight/Prematurity

    • Smoking women are much more likely to give birth to a low-birthweight and/or premature baby. These babies are more likely to develop serious health problems, including cerebral palsy and mental retardation.

    SIDS

    • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a risk for all babies, but the number of newborn deaths is estimated to drop by 5% if every pregnant woman in the U.S. stopped smoking.

    Stillbirth

    • Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of the baby dying during the birthing process. Stillbirths in the U.S. could be reduced by 11% if all women stopped smoking while pregnant.
