Symptoms of Bed Bugs

Bedbugs used to be a rarity, with the harsh pesticide DDT killing off the insects, which feed on blood while you sleep. With more people traveling and DDT now banned for its cancer-causing properties, the little bloodsuckers are making a comeback. Here are some clues that bedbugs have taken up residence in a bedroom.

  1. Bugs

    • You may actually catch a glimpse of a bedbug, but they like the dark and tend to feed in the early hours of the morning. Bedbugs are brown insects, about ¼ inch long, with a flat oval, body.

    Bites

    • Bed bug bites can cause a bright red, itchy rash. However, one out of ten people won't react to bed bug bites.

    Droppings

    • Bedbugs live in your bedframe, and they like to poop there, too. Look for tiny droppings in the bedframe or on your mattress---they'll look like tiny ballpoint pen dots.

    Blood

    • A crushed bedbug may leave behind a bloodstain on your sheets or skin.

    Odor

    • In heavily infested rooms, bed bugs will leave behind a sweet odor in the room.
