Depakote is a common medicine used for the treatment of bipolar disorder as well as seizures. Like all medicines, there are different side effects as a result of taking it; some may be serious. It is important that you discuss with your physician the side effects you experience.

  1. Physical

    • People taking Depakote report having hair loss, tremors, headaches, vomiting. insomnia, dizziness and weakness.

    Mental

    • Nervousness, paranoia and delusions have all been reported effects of taking Depakote.

    Emotional

    • Crying spells, being overly emotional and suicidal thoughts have also been reported by people who have been taking Depakote.

    Warning

    • If you are experiencing rapid weight loss or gain, seizures, yellowing of your skin or eyes or worsening depression, report these symptoms to your health care provider immediately, because this is could be a sign of a very serious problem.

    Drug Interactions

    • Some medications that you should not take while using Depakote are aspirin, Valium, Coumadin and Dilantin. There are others, but these are commonly prescribed medicines.
