Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is a common scalp condition that involves the drying out of the skin. It is not contagious or dangerous, though it is a condition that most people decide to treat. It can cause white flakes to fall from your hair and can be an embarrassing condition. Just what causes dandruff? The following are some of the reasons you may be suffering from dandruff.

From Quick Guide: Dandruff Treatment Basics

    Environment

  1. The environment can very simply cause dry skin. When it is cold out and a room is overheated, it can cause itchy, dry skin of the scalp.
  2. Psoriasis

  3. This condition forces dead skin cells to accumulate in thick, silvery scales. It's possible for this to affect the scalp, causing severe cases of dandruff.
  4. Hair Care

  5. Some people are sensitive to certain skin care products, which can cause dandruff. Shampooing too often can also cause dandruff.
  6. Malassezia

  7. Malassezia is a type of fungus that grows on the scalp of most people without growing out of control. However, it sometimes can flare off, clumping together with oils in the hair to cause dandruff.
  8. Shampoo

  9. If you don't shampoo enough, dandruff can occur. This is because dead skin has been allowed to clump together with oils in the hair.
