Cause of Dog Dandruff

Dandruff, in dogs as in people, is an accumulation of dry, dead skin cells that flake from the skin surface. Usually the condition can be controlled through diet and grooming, although some breeds simply are more prone to dandruff than others. Dandruff is typically a harmless condition, but sometimes indicates serious health issues.

  1. Bathing

    • If dandruff has become a problem, frequent bathing with a specially-formulated dog shampoo removes the dandruff and eventually should prevent future accumulation.

    Grooming

    • Daily brushing is important for dogs that are prone to dandruff. Brushing distributes natural oils throughout the skin and hair, which keeps skin from drying out.

    Diet

    • A deficiency of essential fatty acids in the diet is another cause of dog dandruff. Veterinarians can give advice on dog food which helps prevent dry skin.

    Weather

    • Dogs can develop dandruff during times of low humidity and dry heat, such as in arid areas, or during winter when homes are heated by furnaces or wood stoves.

    Mange

    • Mange is a skin disorder caused by mites that creates dry skin and itching, and sometimes worse problems. Three different species of mites cause three separate types of manage, ranging from very treatable to very serious.

    Diseases

    • Dog dandruff can be an indication of dehydration, which may result from diabetes or kidney disorders.
