About 20 million people suffer from asthma in the United States. One of the most common symptoms of asthma is a persistent night cough. Below are some of the most common asthma cough treatments.

  1. Asthma causes include allergies, environmental factors, fungal growth, genetics, immune deficiency and respiratory infections.

  3. Asthma coughs make a wheezing, crinkling or rattling sound, and continue until the body spasms, gags or even vomits. They are usually dry and unproductive, resulting from an irritation or inflammation.

  5. There are several treatments for asthma coughs. The most common is a bronchodilator, released either by an inhaler or a nebulizer.
    Others treatments include anti-inflammatory drugs, asthma controlling and mucus-reducing medications.
    Herbal treatments include tea with honey and lemon, while dietary treatments include eating foods that are rich in magnesium like bananas or certain vegetables.

  7. Bronchodilators loosen muscles that constrict the airways and cause asthma coughs. Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce bronchial inflammation. Asthma controllers reduce airway constriction and treat inflammation. Mucinex reduces and thins out mucus to reduce cough. Black and green teas contain caffeine and theophyline, which, combined with honey and lemon, soothe irritated throats to avoid asthma coughs.
    Foods high in magnesium are useful in controlling bronchial spasms that lead to asthma coughs.

  9. To avoid asthma coughs, it is important to remove all allergens from the home such as excessive dust, pet dander and materials that could hide dust mites such as bedding, stuffed toys and carpeting.
