New Hampshire is a state where you can visit the ocean and mountains in the same day. Whether in the height of foliage season, mid-winter skiing or a summer wedding on the shores of its many lakes, the state has ample venues for weddings. Before you walk down the aisle, be sure to get your New Hampshire marriage license. Here are the basic requirements for getting married in the Granite State.

    Residency Requirement

  1. There is no residency requirement for New Hampshire.
  2. Time Frame and Jurisdiction

  3. Marriage licenses are valid for 90 days and there is no license approval waiting period. Licenses are only valid for the state of New Hampshire, but are not restricted to town jurisdiction. Once approved, you can be married anywhere within the state lines.
  4. Application for License Procedure and Identification Requirement

  5. The couple must appear together in person at any town or city clerk's office. Both people must bring a type of photo identification that has their legal names and date of birth, such as a driver's license, state or military I.D. or passport. Blood tests are not required for NH licenses.
  6. Required Information

  7. Along with basic information such as your full name, address and social security number, be prepared to present your ancestry, years of education and parent's full names and place of birth.
  8. Second or Third Marriage

  9. If you have been previously married, you must bring proof of the marriage being dissolved. Accepted documents are a divorce decree, annulment papers, dissolution agreement, or the spouse's death certificate.
  10. Payment and Fees

  11. There is a $45 fee for the marriage license. After the wedding, copies of the marriage license are available for $12.
  12. Who Can Marry You in NH?

  13. Any justice of the peace commissioned in the state or minister who lives within the state can perform the ceremony. If you wish to have another clergyman marry you, they must obtain a separate license from the state. New Hampshire does not allow lay people to perform marriages unless they are authorized to perform marriages within their own state. A special request must be filed with the state for this purpose.
