Herbal Remedies for Sleeplessness

Good health requires good sleep. Yet, healthy sleep can be stopped by hormonal imbalances, life changes such as divorce or a death in the family and stress. The lack of good sleep can even become a stressor in its own right. There are a number of prescription sleep aids, but there is the risk of dependency. If prescriptions are a measure of last resort, there are a number of herbal supplements that can be very effective sleep aids.

    Melatonin

  1. Melatonin is a hormone that is found in food and the body that helps to maintain normal circadian rhythms, which are responsible for the wake/sleep cycle of the body.
  2. Valerian Root

  3. Valerian root is one of the more powerful herbal sleep aids available. It has a calming effect on the central nervous system; however, it can cause wakefulness in rare individuals.
  4. Chamomile

  5. Chamomile tea is an age old remedy for sleeplessness that calms the nervous system.
  6. Jamaican Dogwood

  7. Jamaican Dogwood is an extremely powerful sleep aid with both sedative and painkilling effects. It should be taken with care or under the guidance of health care specialist.
  8. California Poppy

  9. California Poppy has sedative properties and can serve to relieve mild anxiety.
  10. Hops

  11. A traditional flavoring for beer, hops also has a mild sedative effect that make them a useful sleep aid.
