Careers in Photojournalism & Photography

There are several careers available in the field of photojournalism and photography. While the majority of these jobs involve capturing the moments that help tell a story, there are also several jobs that involve capturing the characteristics of a person or object that make them unique. There are also some jobs where it is important to try to do both.

  1. Wildlife photographer

    • Wildlife photographers take photos of animals in their natural habitats and sell those photos to publications or to collectors as prints.

    Newspaper photographer

    • The newspaper photographer is the classic photojournalist that is sent out on assignment to get photographs that add to a news story.

    Portrait photographer

    • The portrait photographer takes photos of people either for documentary or fine-art purposes and attempts to take a flattering photo of what makes a person unique.

    Wedding Photographer

    • A wedding photographer is hired by a couple to document a wedding, taking photos that tell the story of the day as well as portraits of the people taking part in the wedding.

    Landscape photographer

    • Like the wildlife photographer, the landscape photographer sells mostly to publications or collectors, but instead photographs impressive natural scenery rather than animals.

    Advertising photographer

    • Advertising photographers spend most of their time in a studio and shoot advertising campaigns, including product photography.

    Stock Photographer

    • Very few people are exclusively stock photographers. Other types of photographers will often sell stock images, which are images sold to designers or publications to fill a content need.
