Type 2 diabetes is almost always preventable with proper diet and lifestyle. If you have one or more risk factors for type 2 diabetes, you may want to consider altering your lifestyle to avoid this dangerous disease.

    Identification

  1. If one or both of your parents have or had type 2 diabetes, then you are also at risk of developing the disease.
You are also at risk for developing type 2 diabetes if you're overweight. The third major risk factor is Gestational Diabetes (GD). Pregnant women who have or had GD are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
  2. Considerations

  3. If you have one or more of the above risk factors, consider eating a high-fiber, low fat diet. Also, exercise is an important factor in avoiding this disease.
  4. Misconceptions

  5. Many people think that if they lose weight and exercise more after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis, they will no longer have the disease. This is not true. Though type 2 diabetes can be well managed and require less treatment, it rarely goes away.
  6. Populations

  7. Latinos and African Americans are at much greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes than other segments of the populations.
  8. Famous Ties

  9. Famous people with type 2 diabetes include Randy Jackson, Jerry Lewis, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle.
