Emergency Asthma Treatments
Many people do not know what to do if somebody has an asthma attack. The best place for a person having a severe asthma attack is in the hospital. If the person cannot breathe or has bluish fingernails or lips, call 911 immediately. Administer the following emergency asthma treatments if somebody is having an asthma attack.
-
Rescue Inhaler
-
Most people with asthma carry a rescue inhaler. Help the person self-administer the rescue inhaler. Generally, a dose is two puffs, although this can vary.
Remove Allergens
-
Ask the person if he is reacting to something in his environment. If an allergy has triggered the asthma, remove the allergen immediately.
-
Call 911
-
If the person is not improving within a few minutes, call 911. Err on the side of overreacting because an asthma attack can be fatal.
Remain Calm
-
The more agitated the person gets, the harder it will be to breathe. Talk calmly and reassuringly, telling the person that help is on the way.
Caffeinated Beverages
-
Caffeine can help the person to breathe. Try to get the person to drink a caffeinated beverage as you wait for help.
