About Chin Implants

Chin implants can make a person's nose look smaller and can provide a more balanced look in the face. These implants can also make the neck look less fleshy. Chin implants are the most common type of facial implant. The procedure is most often performed on women, but chin implants are growing in popularity among men.

Candidates

Good chin implant candidates must be emotionally and mentally stable. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly with their doctor and not have unrealistic expectations about the procedure's outcome. People seeking a chin implant should be healthy and free of bone disorders and disease. This procedure is not recommended for anyone who has taken the acne medication Accutane (isotretinoin) in the 6 months prior to the procedure.

Types

Bone and tissue grafts can be used to make chin implants. The grafts can come from the chin implant patient or from a cadaver. Fat grafts are also used in chin augmentations. Man-made implants are made from several different materials. Injectable materials can also be used to shape the chin. Some injectables offer only temporary results.

Cost

The cost of chin implants varies widely. When getting a price from your doctor, make sure it includes everything you will need. You can expect to pay fees to the surgeon, anesthesiologist and hospital. Medications and the cost of the implant itself may be additional. Unless the chin implant is needed as the result of accident or injury, most insurance companies will not pay for a chin implant.

Side Effects

Infection is possible in both the chin and at any graft sites. Hematoma, seroma and reactions to implant materials can occur. It is also possible for implants to shift or move. Any facial numbness lasting longer than 3 weeks should be reported to your doctor and may require trimming or moving of the implant.

Recovery

Chin implants can result in numbness and bruising for several days. It can be hard to talk and smile the first few days after surgery. It can also be difficult to eat, and many patients find themselves on a liquid diet for about 10 days. Swelling and bruising are also common and mild swelling can last up to 5 months. Many patients sleep in a chair or surrounded by pillows to keep from rolling onto a swollen face. Recovery times are often shorter with injectable materials than with surgery.
