Earwax Build Up

Earwax (cerumen) is a natural substance that is produced in the ear and serves a perfectly valid purpose in keeping the surface of the canal healthy. If it does not clear in the normal way, particularly in individuals who are subject to over-production of the substance, then it likely will need to be removed.

  1. Identification

    • Symptoms of earwax build up may range from non-existent to itching to ringing noises or actual loss of hearing. The size of the earwax accumulation does not seem to affect the symptoms. Even large accumulations may be unnoticeable.

    Benefits

    • Earwax has beneficial effects, helping to keep the ear canals moist and prevent bacterial from taking root. Normally, earwax is removed naturally as it moves from the inner part of the ear to the opening. There it dries and flakes out of the ear.

    Warning

    • Attempts to remove earwax at home can cause more harm than good. Devices, such as cotton-tipped swabs, may result in packing the ear wax in tighter, leading to an impaction. It is best to have wax removed by a professional.

    Fun Fact

    • Apparently, no records are kept of the size of pieces of earwax, although anecdotal evidence suggests that something the size of a raisin is considered quite large.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Earwax solvents, either commercial or made with a 50-50 mixture of sterile water and hydrogen peroxide can software and remove the some wax, particularly if the canal is irrigated after this with warm water, unless the person has a perforated eardrum.
