Measurements of College Football Fields

Most American football fields are the same size, whether high school, college or professional. Football fields are measured in terms of yards. One yard equals three feet. The only fields that vary in measurements are played in Arena or Canadian leagues.

Length

The length of a football field runs from end line to end line. It is 100 yards from end line to end line.

Width

A football field runs sideline to sideline, with each team standing behind their respective sidelines. It is 53 ½ yards from sideline to sideline.

End Zones

The end zone is where each team scores touchdowns. Football fields have 2. Each end zone is 10 yards deep and 53 ½ yards wide.

Goal Posts

Goal posts, also known as uprights, are used to kick extra points and field goals. The two uprights are 18 feet, 6 inches away from each other with a crossbar 10 feet high.

Hash Marks

The only measurement difference between college and professional football fields is the length of the hash-marks. At the start of every play, the referees must place the ball between the hash-marks, as the play cannot begin too close to the sideline. The hash-marks in college are 40 feet apart. The NFL's hash-marks are lined up with the goalposts.
