About Hoover Dam

The Hoover Dam is located on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The dam created Lake Mead, which is named after the man who oversaw the dam's construction, Elwood Mead. Although it has since been surpassed, the Hoover Dam was the largest concrete structure and the largest electrical power producing plant when it was completed in 1935.

    Odd Fact

    • On December 20, 1922, Bureau of Reclamation employee J.G. Tierney fell off a barge and drowned while participating in a geological survey pertaining to the dam. In 1932, exactly 13 years later, his son Patrick W. Tierney fell from one of the dam's intake towers and died.
