There are several different kinds of sleep disorders recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The disorders can range from respiratory problems, movement disorders and sleep behavior disorders.

    Sleep Apnea

  1. Sleep apnea is when a person stops breathing for a lengthy period of time while asleep. Some signs of sleep apnea that occur during sleep include snoring, gasping and pauses in breathing.
  2. Painful Mornings

  3. After a night of sleep apnea or other sleep disorder, people often suffer from morning headaches, dry mouths, sore throats and in general feel very groggy.
  4. Exhaustion

  5. Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) is a diagnosis that frequently goes along with a diagnosis of a sleeping disorder.
  6. Secondary Effects

  7. Sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, can contribute to other health problems, including high blood pressure, tachycardia, bradycardia and irregular heart beats. Conversely, sleep specialists consider the presence of these problems as potential signs of sleep disorders.
  8. Limb Movements

  9. Periodic limb movement syndrome is when a person's legs or arms twitch frequently during the night. These movements disrupt sleep, keeping the person from reaching a deep, restful stage of sleep.
  10. Teeth grinding

  11. Bruxism is when a person grinds their teeth while sleeping. The signs of bruxism include worn and damaged teeth, jaw pain and TMJ.
  12. Sleep Behavior Problems

  13. Night terrors and REM behavior disorders both cause the person to move wildly while asleep.
