Acne can affect both teenagers and adults. While there is no definitive cure for it, there are several products on the market that can help lessen the appearance of acne and prevent scarring.

From Quick Guide: All About Acne Treatments

    Solutions

  1. Milder cases of acne can be treated with home remedies, such as a mask made of natural cooked oatmeal or a face wash made of warm nettle tea.
  2. Options

  3. Over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide are the most common type of acne treatment used today.
  4. Warning

  5. Most acne medicine causes the skin to dry out and peel, thus preventing pores from becoming clogged with oil, which is when bacteria reproduces and acne appears.
  6. Effects

  7. Birth control pills containing ethinylestradiol are sometimes prescribed to help clear the skin and prevent or diminish the appearance of acne.
  8. Types

  9. Aside from creams, there are also antibiotic lotions (such as erythromycin) and Retinoids that can be used to treat acne.
  10. Expert Insight

  11. For severe cases of acne that also show signs of infection, a dermatologist can prescribe Isotretinoin (an oral retinoid), antibiotics or an interlesional corticosteroid injection, in order to speed up healing and prevent scarring.
