Cosmetic surgery (also called plastic surgery) has been routinely performed in America since the 19th century. World War I gave physicians an opportunity to help soldiers scarred by battle while advancing the field of cosmetic surgery. The American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons was formed in 1931 to certify surgeons specializing in cosmetic procedures.

    • Any surgeon can perform cosmetic surgery. There are no regulations stating who is qualified, so consumers should check a potential surgeon's credentials carefully.

    Demographics

    • The majority of individuals seeking cosmetic surgery have an income in the range of $30,000 to $90,000.

    Silicone Implants

    • Women can choose to have silicone breast implants since the ban was lifted in November 2006, by the FDA.

    Statistics

    • In America, about 11.7 million cosmetic surgeries and nonsurgical procedures were performed in 2007.

    Men

    • More men are seeking cosmetic surgeries and procedures at an increase of almost 20 percent annually.

    Botox

    • Almost 3 million Botox treatments were given to both men and women in 2007, and it is the top cosmetic procedure performed.

    Age

    • Thirty-five to 50-tear-olds are the most likely age group to choose cosmetic surgery or a nonsurgical procedure.
