About Mac Mini Memory

Mac Mini computers have come a long way since their inception at MacWorld in January of 2005. In three years, consumers have seen seven revisions to the components, including two major upgrades to the memory housed within the form factor.

History

At the MacWorld convention, consumers were surprised to find it came with no keyboard, mouse or monitor. Being the first of its kind, its still carried a powerful 1.25gHz processor, stocked with 1 chip of 256MB PC-2700 DDR SDRAM. Consumers were able to expand up to 1GB but only at the time of purchase. As of 2009, Apple has upgraded the memory in all current models of Mac Minis to hold 2 slots of PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM SDRAM.

Types

The original PowerPC G4 models only provided room for 1 slot of PC-2700 DDR SDRAM upgradeable to only a mere 1GB of memory. Intel Core and and current Intel Core 2 provide room for 2 slots of PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM SDRAM. Intel Core models are expandable to 2GBs of memory.

Considerations

When purchasing a new Mac Mini either online or at a retail store, take time to ask questions of the sales staff on how much memory you'll need for your particular computing needs. Apple only allows for upgrades to the memory during the time of purchase online and/or in store; they do not upgrade memory after purchase or allow for after market by upgrades consumers as it violates their warranty.

Warning

Do not attempt to upgrade the memory yourself unless you are certified by Apple as it will violate their warranty. Have a qualified Apple Genius upgrade your memory at the time of purchase or find a certified Apple technician.

Size

The Mac Mini 2007 model comes stock with 1GB (two 512MB) PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM SDRAM and is expandable up to 2GB (two 1GB) . Past models, excluding the first version, came standard with 512MB and were expandable upto 1GB.
