History

Lime was used in the mortar for the entire chimney until the 1800s, when clay was introduced for economic reasons.

Warning

Chimney mortar that is cracked and damaged can let in moisture, causing mold and mildew to grow in your chimney.

Prevention/Solution

Old and cracked mortar can be chipped off and replaced with new mortar to inexpensively lengthen the life of your chimney.

Freshly applied chimney mortar will take about 30 days to cure and should have a waterproofing product applied to it.
