Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency technique used to treat patients who have gone into cardiac arrest. CPR can be performed by health care professionals or by a trained lay person. CPR is used until a person can receive more advanced emergency care performed by a health care professionals. Performed immediately, CPR increases a persons likelihood of survival by more than 40 percent.

  1. In 1960, a physician named Peter Safar used prior research on resuscitation and compression techniques to invent CPR.

  3. CPR maintains blood circulation and respiration when a person is no longer breathing and has gone into cardiac arrest.

  5. CPR is most beneficial when performed within four minutes of cardiac arrest and when followed within ten minutes by defibrillation.

  9. Anyone can become certified in CPR by taking a training course and recertifying on an annual basis.
