Facts on Blackheads

Blackheads are considered to be a type of acne. While hard to get rid of, there are ways to treat blackheads with both over-the-counter methods and by home remedy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • A blackhead is a blackish or yellowish plug in the skin that is caused by overactive oil glands.

    Features

    • A blackhead consists of keratin and oil, which gets darker as it hardens.

    Types

    • There are six types of acne that can include blackheads: acne vulgaris, adult acne, acne mechanica, achne cosmetica, excoriated acne, and infantile acne.

    Prevention/Solution

    • There are a number of products on the market for removing and preventing blackheads such as creams, cleansers, scrubs, and even tools to extract backheads.

    Theories/Speculation

    • There are many home remedies that are theorized to work on blackheads, such as scrubbing lemon juice on the area with a cotton ball or using a dab of toothpaste on a toothbrush and brushing the area.

    Considerations

    • While some with mild blackhead problems can treat the problem themselves, others need to see a dermatologist to treat a larger acne problem.

    Warning

    • Do not pick at blackheads that are tender or red as that is a sign of infection. Infected blackheads need to be treated by a dermatologist.
