  • How to Read Bassoon Music

    The bassoon is a double reed woodwind instrument, similar to an oboe but in the tenor range. The bassoon that is used today was developed in Germany in the late 18th Century. It has 7 feet 4.5 inches of tubing when separated which shrinks to 4 feet 3.5 inches when put together. The bore is conical and usually made of rosewood. Sound is produced by forcing air through the double reed mouthpiece and opening or closing the keys on the instrument which changes the length of the tubing to create different notes.
