Painful, irritating chapped lips are a common problem, especially during cold, dry weather. Baking soda, a product found in most kitchen cupboards, may help. Although it doesn't lubricate the lips, a baking soda scrub sloughs off dead, dry skin. Once the old skin is removed, your favorite lip cream or balm will be more effective.

Baking Soda as an Exfoliant

To make a baking soda scrub, place a spoonful of baking soda in a cup and then mix in a few drops of water to form a paste. Wash your hands thoroughly. Then use your fingertip to massage the scrub into your lips using gentle, circular motions. Leave the baking soda scrub on your lips for a minute; then wipe it off with a soft, damp cloth. Apply lip balm, petroleum jelly or vitamin E oil to replenish lost moisture. Use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 every time you go outdoors.
