After buying this, you will need a stiff drink. That drink is not included in the cost.
The most expensive cocktail you’ve ever had is probably the one right after you said:
“Hahahahic Im tooodally Fine I’lljusthaveONNNEEmore!!!!!”
Here’s a healthy alternative: Just throw down $1,300 for a Mai Tai from The Merchant Hotel.
Let that soak in: $1,300. That’s a chunk of change that could buy you a lot of things, like 130 other drinks, or a Corolla.
For 2010, the Belfast, Ireland-based Merchant Hotel was able to win the official title of most expensive cocktail in the world, aka the “if you ain’t got no money take yo’ broke ass home” drank.
The blend: 2 ounces 17-year-old J. Wray & Nephew Jamaican rum, 1/2 ounce French Garnier Orgeat, 1/2 ounce Holland DeKuyper Orange Curacao, 1/4 ounce rock candy syrup, and the juice of one fresh lime served in a golden glass of pure regret.
Whence the expense? It’s that $41,000 bottle of rum, which was bottled 70 years ago and includes 1915 vintage liquor. Yeah, that.
The Mai Tai has the same ingredients as the first one Victor Bergeron poured in 1944 at Trader Vic’s, his legendary South Seas-style bar and restaurant in Oakland, Calif.
Wonder if Vic ever thought his drink would surface 74 years later with a price tag of $600 more than what it cost him to build the restaurant in the first place.
How Do We Know All This? Cuz we’re brilliant. Also:
The Census knows how much you’re paying for booze every year, according to where you drink it. Creepy much?
For those of you who will not be traveling to Northern Ireland to sample a $1,300 beverage, here are 3 delicious drinks you can make yourself. And here are 30 more, you alkie you.
SFGate tells you how to make the Merchant’s Mai Tai, minus the part where you pawn your flatscreen.
Trader Joe will always be our hero, but if you want to know more about that Vic dude, fine. Here.
This Mai Tai is so expensive because of the rum. The rum is so expensive because of the Mai Tais. It’s crazy. The BBC will explain.
