Car insurance isn’t cheap — the average driver in America spends $791 per year on it — so of course you want big bang for your buck. But with myriad auto insurance companies clamoring for your business, how do you know which one to choose?
Insure.com, a site featuring insurance information for consumers, surveyed more than 5,600 drivers to find out how happy they were with their car insurance company. It looked at customer service, claims satisfaction, value for price paid, policy renewal plans and whether you’d recommend the company. “What we found is that the top companies were pretty on top of all the categories we measured,” says Amy Danise, editorial director of Insure.com.
To be sure, this doesn’t mean that these companies provide a great experience to all consumers. And you have to be careful about the insurer’s financial health (you can check in on that with a site like ambest.com).
Still, what other people are saying about their insurance company can be a good barometer of where you might consider buying auto insurance. Here are the 10 car insurance providers that consumers like best.
2. Erie Insurance
3. Auto-Owners Insurance
5. Country Insurance
6. American Family
9. State Farm
No matter what insurance company you’re thinking about using, you can save money if you’re savvy. “The biggest way to save money is to shop around,” says Danise. “Prices vary so much between companies for the same level of coverage.” She recommends getting quotes from at least four companies.
You should also call your auto insurance company and ask if they have any discounts that can help you save. Because it costs so much more to get a new customer than to retain an old one, auto insurance companies are motivated to offer you things like discounts so you don’t jump ship, Danise says.
