DIY Mother’s Day Gift

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we thought now might be a good time to throw Dad a bone and offer up a chic (yet surprisingly simple) DIY project to try with the kids.

The bright colors and vintage feel of this customized glass serving set are sure to impress. Plus, all the tools necessary to complete the project can be acquired during a quick trip to the craft store, and it requires a very low level of craftiness from Dad.

So go ahead and forward this post to your husband (we won’t tell) or, better yet, forward to your best mom friend’s husband.

The beauty of this project is that it looks like the handiwork of an artist but can be pulled off by just about anyone (or any age). And it doesn’t take a lot of running around to get what you need either. We found everything (bottle, mason jars, cute straws, stencils, sponge applicator, paint and even the pre-cut jar lids) at our local craft store.

To begin, prep the surface of your glass water bottle by washing and drying well. Then apply an adhesive stencil, perfect for projects involving curved surfaces, and press down firmly.

Now it’s time to break out some glass paints (check the back of the paint packaging to be sure you’re buying the right type). Pour a little paint into a bowl and dip the sponge into it, then blot on top of the stencil until the surface is completely covered. Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.

Don’t worry too much about achieving perfection here, especially if the kids are handling these steps. Mom will love the handmade look of the finished product.

Finally, go outside and spray paint the lids on top of a paper bag or tarp. (Again, check the back of the can to be sure you’re using paint that is meant to be applied to metal.)

That’s it! Package your bottle and mason jar cups with a few fancy paper straws and the kids will be all set to present Mom with a little piece of the spa that she can enjoy everyday.
