Outdoor rugs are magical! They can turn a slab of outdoor concrete into an extra room for entertaining during the summer months. Finding your perfect outdoor rug can be quite a challenge, though. Outdoor rugs are either bland and boring or incredibly overpriced.
Making my own with a whimsical stencil was the solution. Our new Southwest-inspired cactus rug has just the right amount of fun to liven up any evening outdoors, and it feels great underfoot.
To make the stenciled cactus rug, I purchased a large (8 ft by 10 ft) AstroTurf rug at my local Costco for $20. A huge section of AstroTurf works well to cover a large space affordably.
Next, I created a cactus template — download the festive cactus template I used right here, or create your own variation of the design. Cacti seemed just right for summer, but the concept could easily translate into any design that might match your space or seasonal mood.
After the template was printed and cut out, I traced it into the center of a piece of poster board. Then I cut out the inside of the tracing to create a large-form cactus stencil.
Then, it was just a matter of placing and spraying the cactus. Use outdoor spray paint to ensure the design will not wash off after the first summer storm. Create a repeating pattern, or place the stencil in a couple of sporadic places for a more whimsical look. Allow the rug to fully dry before rolling it up or walking on it.
I just adore the “oomph” this fun rug gives to our outdoor dining space, and I love seeing guests’ eyes light up when they realize how little details like spray painting cactus can make an outdoor space into a living area.
