Holiday at the Beach

Fall is in the air! It’s finally boots and sweater weather in Southern California! This time of year I’m busy decorating my home for fall and the upcoming holidays. Normally, I pack away my seashells and corals after summer but, as I was getting ready to do that this year, I realized I love these items and I hate putting them away for a whole season. So, this year, I plan to incorporate them into my fall decor.

Last year, I bought a beautiful evergreen swag that has a really natural look to it with pine leaves and pine cones on it.  I used very traditional colors and decorations on it and it looked absolutely wonderful, but I’m determined to change it up this year. By adding shells, coral and holiday balls and crystals in more subdued colors (think copper and blue), it will take on an entirely new look. I may even put some big candles in the leaves. The new battery operated candles look so real and are completely safe. I will use it as my main centerpiece on my coffee table when you first come in my home. Voila! Holiday at the beach.

Lanterns are another cozy beach accent that can be updated to work for the holidays. By adding some sea shells and evergreen foliage, a lantern suddenly becomes a beautiful accent piece. Go one step further and add sparkly holiday balls to the mix. If you can bare to give your shells a coat of paint, silver spray painted shells look magnificent on the mantle.  You may even want to add some to the tree, or put a few in a basket with white dusted pine cones. My latest find is a shell “curtain” that has dozens of shells hanging from individual strings that I’m cutting apart to use as garlands on some small trees near my fireplace.

You can adapt any of these ideas to decorate your home for the holidays using whatever your favorite collection may be. Burlap ribbon can give a swag a wonderful holiday feel in a more organic way. A collection of porcelain birds peeking out from pine needles makes a wonderful decoration for a break front. Any collection can be wonderful if you add some holiday sparkle to the mix.

Small accents in different spaces really make your home glow. Put your own twist on holiday décor by adapting your favorite pieces to the season. By putting your own twist on it with your favorite things, decorations will feel more meaningful and unique. Plan ahead and use your imagination to create fun surprises for you and your family, room by room.

Happy decorating!
