I’ve had them fried, but I never knew you could grill green tomatoes until recently.
My garden is full of heirloom tomato varieties and I’ve been waiting so patiently for them to ripen. Then I read about grilled green tomatoes in a cookbook called Simply Organic, so I decided to sacrifice a few of my greenest orbs to this cause.
I was surprised at how good these are! If you’ve got a garden full of green tomatoes like I do, I highly suggest you try them. These are also great to make at the end of the season, when you’ve still got green tomatoes on the vine and frost is threatening.
I was inspired by Simply Organic, but didn’t really use an official recipe for these. I started by slicing 2 large green tomatoes, which I put in a large bowl with a couple of glugs of olive oil. Then, I added some minced fresh garlic from my garden, as well as some torn leaves of basil. I heated up my grill, tossed everything in my grill basket, and cooked the tomatoes until they were nice and crisp, with browned edges (the basil crisped up, too, and was delicious). When sprinkled with a bit of sea salt and fresh pepper, and drizzled with a little more olive oil, this is a different, but wonderful way to enjoy homegrown tomatoes.
