Hi, my name’s Ashlae (pronounced Ashlay, not Ashley). I grew up in small town Ohio but have been living in Denver, with my partner Thom, for the past five years. I started Oh, Ladycakes in late 2011 as a way to document and share the recipes that were coming out of my tiny rental kitchen. Shortly after publishing my first post, I started making and selling 12 month aged organic vanilla extract from the spare bedroom of my downtown apartment.
I’ve been baking for nearly seven years; but as of four years ago, everything that comes out of my kitchen is 100% vegan (and occasionally gluten free and/or raw). One of the things I love most about baking without animal derived ingredients is the challenge that comes from trying to recreate recipes that rely so heavily on eggs for binding and butter for creaming. Not to mention I thoroughly enjoy making dairy enthusiasts second-guess their thoughts surrounding vegan food (which are typically synonymous with the sound EWW).
Aside from spending long hours in the kitchen, I enjoy watching reruns of The Office, traveling abroad, heavy weight lifting (the direct result of growing up with five brothers), and playing the hilariously entertaining game that is Cards Against Humanity. Oh, and if I had to pick three Oh, Ladycakes recipes to eat for the rest of my life, I’d go with the raw fig cheesecake, banoffee pie, and sea salt chocolate chip cookies.
I’m thrilled to contribute to eHow’s food blog and hope that you’ll enjoy the recipes I’ll be sharing with you.
