Who can resist all of the wonderful rich foods that are offered up at the holiday season? Not me. But if you reveled in the holiday spirit, and indulged in all of the earthly delights available, you may want to scale back now, and treat your body to simple, cleansing foods.

Smoothies are a great way to cleanse, without a lot of effort. Making them is as easy as throwing your favorite fruits into a blender, adding water, juice, or milk, and blending until you have a smooth, tasty concoction.

Below is a simple smoothie that you should feel free to riff on. It gets a jolt of flavor and sweetness from frozen strawberries, which give it a bright pink color. There’s also a chunk of fresh ginger, which is good for strengthening the immune system, improving circulation, and easing stomach upset. The flavors are rounded out by sweet apples and oranges, which are in season right now, along with all citrus fruits.

Choose organic fruit for your smoothie, to avoid the risk of putting pesky pesticides into your cleansing regime. Drink this smoothie for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It makes a few servings, so the time it takes to peel and chop the fruit pays off for more than one meal. Store leftovers in the fridge, and re-blend the smoothie before drinking to freshen it up.

 

Cleansing Smoothie Recipe

2 crisp, sweet organic apples

2 oranges, peeled

1/2-inch chunk fresh ginger, peeled

1 10-ounce bag frozen organic strawberries

3 cups water

Core the apples and coarsely chop. Coarsely chop the oranges, removing any seeds. Mince the ginger. Combine apples, oranges, ginger, and strawberries in a blender, and top off with the water. Blend until smooth. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
