Flying with a Toddler: What’s in Your Bag of Tricks?

By Christina Stanley

Last month, my husband and I decided to book a trip to California with our 2 1/2 and 4 month old sons. It seemed like a good idea – at the time. But now we are two weeks away from our first flight as a family of four and I have to admit, I’m panicking a little. My plan is to be as prepared as possible and hope for the best (that’s all any parent can do, right?).

Anyone who’s ever traveled with kids, whether it be by car or by plane, can tell you that a bag of tricks

Homemade Snacks: Post-Game Ideas

Sick of watching your kids exercise then run off the field straight towards a table filled with junk food and neon-colored sports drinks? Fear, not. This post is for you!

It may seem like your kids are always hungry and in search of a snack, especially after sports. And a lot of the snacks offered post-game can be frighteningly unhealthy. Snacks filled with salt, sugar and fat (sound familiar?), are more likely to fill your kids out and not up. If done right, snacking can be an important part of a healthy diet and an excellent opportunity to offer our

Keep the Heat Away: Summer Mixed Fruit Cobbler

As the temperature rises, I like to keep the heat (and the mess) out of my kitchen by making most of my meals on the outdoor grill. Yes, that means dessert too! I’m not talking plain ‘ol grilled fruit. Been there. Done that. I’m talking cobbler people. Not just any cobbler. My Mixed Berry and Stone Fruit Cobbler. It’s one of my all time favorite summer desserts and for good reason.

Prep time is under 10 minutes and it can be made with any combination of berries and stone fruits. Choose what’s around and ripe for the best flavor. It’s

Dessert In A Jar: Summer Berry Pudding

They say that necessity is the mother of invention and that couldn’t be more true for this recipe. The weather has been hot here in NYC and I was craving summer berry pudding, a British dessert consisting of layers of bread and berries cooked in a sugar syrup and placed into a mold to set.  My goal was to make individual puddings but sadly, all but two of my ramekins were broken.

I didn’t want to make one giant pudding because, well, then I’d eat it all. I knew individual puddings would save me from myself (portion control, people!) and

Make Your Lemonade Stand the Best on the Block

I grew up in the city, but never once had a lemonade stand. It’s such a pity because little did I know, I was missing out on a great opportunity to learn about business, goal-setting, community service … and make a little cash on the side. As soon as my son is a bit older, you better believe we’re setting up shop. Having a lemonade stand is a great summer activity for both parents and kids because it’s not only fun, it’s educational.

Running a lemonade stand with your kids can provide them with so much more than just monetary

Color Me Happy: Natural Decorating Colors

Kids like colors, especially when it comes to food, and brightly colored snacks and sweets have become a common part of our daily culture. In our house, we try to avoid food additives as much as possible. It isn’t always easy, but if you stick to whole foods and refrain from processed, packaged items, you can keep your exposure to a minimum.

Despite this, I do recognize sometimes you need a little color in your life — and your food.

Determined to find a better way, I began searching for natural food coloring products. This journey lead me to discover

5 Ingredients in Search of a Meal

Yesterday was one of those crazy days spent running errands with my two young boys. By the time we got home, all I wanted to do was relax for a few before dinner. One problem – I’d forgotten to defrost my pre-planned meal.

Hoping for an easy substitute, I scanned my sparse fridge and found my dinner inspiration in the form of six lovely (and somewhat lonely) eggs. A little more investigating and I was able to locate a small zucchini, onions and some feta cheese. Perfect. Eggs have saved me many times before and it became clear that a

Cooking with Kids

Do you cook with your kids? My son has been in the kitchen with me since he was a newborn sitting in his bouncy chair. Now that he’s a little older, the fun is just beginning. Cooking with children can be messy, but I promise you, cooking together as a family is well worth the time and effort.

When we teach a child to cook, we are empowering them to take charge of their own nutrition and helping them grow into healthy adults. People who know how to cook, eat better because they don’t have to rely on prepared meals

Banana-Raspberry Pops: Summer Fun on a Stick

Frozen pops are a favorite summer treat around our house. Long before those hot days roll around, my son is already focused on making these delicious snacks. Truth be told, we have some in the freezer all year long, but that doesn’t make them any less fun in the summer.

If using wholesome ingredients, frozen pops are a great way to get more fruit and dairy into your kids’ diets. You can customize them to suit your tastes and dietary needs, and the possible combinations are nearly endless. If your favorite fruits aren’t in season, frozen fruit is a great
