How to Make a Maxi Skirt With a Yoga-Style Waistband

It’s easy to make a comfy maxi skirt with a yoga-style waistband out of things you already have!

Last winter when I published my upcycled sweater dress tutorial, I declared I could wear that dress every day if I thought no one would notice. Well, I think I might have a contender with this upcycled maxi skirt with a yoga-style waistband. It’s so comfy, I seriously could wear this every day, too!

It’s so easy, I want to make one for each day of the week.

All you need is a long knit thrift store dress, a coordinating thrifted t-shirt, a sharp pair of scissors, a few pins and your trusty sewing machine.

First, cut the top of the dress off at the bottom of the armholes.

Cut the hem off the bottom of the t-shirt.

Cut a 12 inch piece off the bottom of the t-shirt.

To create the new waistband, measure your waist. Divide that number by two. Then measure, mark, pin and sew along that measurement on the 12-inch piece you cut from the bottom of the t-shirt. Trim off the extra so you have a half inch seam allowance.

Fold the new waistband in half so the wrong sides and the raw edges are now together.

Place the skirt inside the waistband so right sides and the raw edges are together.

Pin in place, matching the sides and front and back centers.

Change your machine to a zig zag stitch.

Use the zig zag stitch to sew the raw edges of the skirt and waistband together along your pin line with a half inch seam allowance.
