Certification of special educators is a voluntary achievement available through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) and is titled Exceptional Needs Specialist. As with all NBPTS certification, candidates are judged based on the approved standards for that particular certificate area. For the Exceptional Needs Specialist discipline, there are 12 separate standards by which a teacher is assessed.
