How to Make Wind Chimes From Old Silverware

Start collecting miscellaneous pieces of silverware at yard sales and flea markets and make a wind chime this year for the gardener on your gift list. You'll need four spoons and two forks.

Things You’ll Need:

Fishing Lines
1/16-inch Drill Bits
Needle-nose Pliers And Blunt End Pliers
Safety Glasses
old silverware (4 spoons, 2-6 forks)

Preparing the Spoons

Step1

Drill a hole in each spoon handle, about 1/8 inch from the end, with a 1/16-inch drill bit.

Preparing the Fork for the Hanger

Step1

Drill a hole in a fork, in the middle of the flat area above the tines.

Step2

Bend the tines with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Place the end of the pliers close to the body of the fork. Gently twist, moving the tines out to a 90-degree angle from the fork. Bend the middle tines north and south and outside tines east and west.

Step3

Bend the tips of the tines into small loops by twisting them around the end of the pliers. Use a pair of regular pliers to finish closing the loops.

Step4

Bend the top of the fork over to make a hook to hang on a tree branch.

Preparing the Fork for the Base and Assembling the Chime

Step1

Drill a hole in a fork as you did the spoons: about 1/8 inch from top, using a 1/16-inch drill bit.

Step2

Tie fishing line from the hole above the tines of the hanging fork to the hole in the base fork. Let the fork hang down about 6 inches.

Step3

Tie fishing line into the small loops on the tines of the hanging fork and then to the holes in the spoons. The bowls of the spoons should hit the middle of the base fork's tines.

Tips & Warnings

Work slowly and gently. Expect that some forks will break, so be sure to have a few extra on hand.
Wear safety glasses. Work slowly and carefully with the drill bit.
