The last thing you expect when going to a shelter to escape domestic violence is hostility and abuse from your fellow survivors. Yet bullying in women's shelters is common. Many times women are simply acting out what they have endured during their relationships with abusive men; others are looking for a way to feel empowered after having their rights and choices taken away by someone stronger. Identifying and putting a stop to bullying takes courage, especially when you're used to being victimized, but you must do it to maintain your safety and your rights.
