Although many parents worry biting is a symptom that something is wrong with their child, biting is very common behavior in young children. There are a variety of reasons why children bite. Biting is usually more common between the ages of 14 and 24 months, although teething babies bite as well. Most children tend to outgrow biting habits as they mature.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, almost five million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. Approximately 800,000 sustain injuries requiring medical treatment, and about half these are children. Fortunately, due to prevention education, the rate of dog bites among children is declining, although the total rate of dog attacks is on the rise.
Behavioral problems in children usually occur in phases, depending on the child's age. Biting can be a particularly troublesome behavioral problem that is sometimes hard to break. Hurting other children cannot be tolerated; the biting problem must be controlled as soon as possible to prevent injuries to others.
