Deep sea trenches are formed in the space between two tectonic plates. Trenches are depressions in the seafloor that can stretch along entire continents, and are usually relatively narrow compared to their length. Ocean trenches, once thought to be biologically sterile, have been found to contain thousands of unique species adapted to the harsh conditions of the deep.
