Gas Vs. Wood Burning Fireplaces

  1. Gas & Wood Burning Advantages

    • Gas fireplaces are cleaner and do not create an odor. You also don't need to obtain firewood. Since they are controlled by a switch they are easier to use as well. Wood burning fireplaces provide a more traditional, and arguably authentic, fire experience. Many also actually like the smell of a wood burning fire.

    Gas & Wood Burning Disadvantages

    • Vented gas fireplaces exist, but some are ventless. The ventless gas fireplaces emit carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates, according to Consumer Reports. They also produce water vapor, which can sometimes create mold. Wood burning fireplaces can cause house fires if not properly attended. Firewood must also be on hand.

    Bottom Line

    • Choosing the right fireplace will depend, in part, on preference. If you like building fires with real wood, don't mind the smoky smell and are confident that you will be able to attend to it safely, go for a wood burning stove. If you want an easy option, go for a vented gas fireplace.
