How Many Recessed Lights Should Be in a Room?
-
Set Spacing Is Standard
-
The standard rule of thumb for recessed lighting is that four-inch lights should be spaced four feet apart, five-inch lights should be space every five feet, and so on. Lights should be 12 inches from walls as well.
-
Special Uses Mean Variety
-
There may be particular reasons to have more or less light in certain areas. If there is a work space in one part of the room, there is artwork to emphasize, or an effect to create on the walls, the spacing may vary.
Bottom Line
-
Start with the standard spacing, then consider room use. Add more lights at standard intervals if you need more light for task lighting, and use fewer for a room needing atmosphere and mood.
