What to Do When Pomegranate Flowers Fall

  1. Pests and Disease

    • Pomegranate flowers begin blooming in May and can last until early autumn. If your pomegranate's flowers fall in early spring, inspect your tree for damage. Some common pests such as white-flies, scales and mealy bugs can infest pomegranate trees, causing flower damage, which can result in early blossom fall. If you discover insects or other damaged, wilted flowers, then inquire at your local nursery and garden center about anti-fungal and insecticide sprays.

    Cycle of Life

    • Pomegranate flowers generally fall by early autumn, when fruiting varieties are normally harvested. Since pomegranate flowers do not cause staining or damage to driveways or other landscape features, it is not necessary to treat the flowers any differently than you would other fallen flowers.

    Bottom Line

    • Always inspect your trees for root rot, fungal infestation and insect damage when you suspect your plant is not performing as it should. Flower drop, when it occurs during the active growing season, may be caused by disease and insect damage.
