How Deep Should a Fence Post Hole Be?
-
One Third of the Post should be Buried
-
The experts at Taylor Rentals recommends that a fence post hole be driven deeply enough so that one third of the fence post lies beneath the ground. For instance, to build a 4-foot high fence, a 6-foot post is driven 2 feet into the ground, with 4 feet remaining above ground.

Six-Foot Fences Require Two Feet of post Buried
-
Quality Equipment Rental recommends a slightly different option when it comes to digging fence posts. The company recommends a fence up to 6 feet high requires at least 2 feet of the pole be buried. This equates to 25 percent of the fence post underground.
Bottom Line
-
Factor in the environment when digging holes for your fence posts. Twenty-five percent of the post buried may be fine in areas where you don't get too much wind or weather; in a harsher environment, bury at least one third of the post in the ground.
