The Ring Can Be Worn for Years

Widowers, according to etiquette, can wear their wedding bands for as long as they wish, whether this is a few months or several years after the death of their wives. Some men feel closer to their wives by wearing the ring every day, and others only wear the ring on special occasions, such as family holidays or their late wife's birthday.

The Ring Can Be "Changed"

In some cases, a widower may switch the ring from his left hand to his right to signify that he is prepared to start dating again. Some men choose to remove their ring altogether at some point, and put it in a safe place. The time that a man chooses to do this depends on his grieving process and whether he has any intentions of marrying again.

Bottom Line

A widower does not have to remove the wedding band given to him by his late wife until and unless he is emotionally ready to do so. The ring can also be made into another piece of jewelry, or passed on to the widower's children, at his discretion.
