Should a Business Plan Be Long or Short?

  1. External Business Plans

    • External business plans are written with investors and bankers in mind. The purpose of an external business plan is to capture the interest of persons and entities that could potentially provide funding. After such interest is captured, further discussion can ensue. Therefore external business plans should not exceed 25 pages.

    Internal Business Plans

    • Internal business plans are written with the management team or employees in mind. The chief purpose of an internal business plan is to establish daily operations and long-term milestones, and act as a handbook. Therefore the length of an internal business plan does not matter as much, and can range from one sentence to 100 pages.

    Bottom Line

    • A business plan should only be as long as is necessary to accomplish its purpose. When writing an external business plan, the purpose is to keep investors and bankers reading. Therefore it must be complete but as concise as possible. Internal business plans can be any length.
