How Much Should I Pay for a Sphynx Kitten?
-
The Market Value
-
Sphynx cat breeders, like any other business, will set the price of their kittens according to public demand. Reputable breeders that allow visitors to their catteries also give the kittens shots and veterinary exams and can charge anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 per kitten.
-
Adoption Fee
-
Purebred cats and kittens like the Sphynx wind up in animal shelters and cat rescue organizations. Puppy mill breeders often breeds cats like the Sphynx as well, which may wind up in a local animal rescue group. Sphynx cats need weekly bathing and have special health needs that cat owners many not be willing to deal with. The only cost would be the adoption fee, which varies from shelter to shelter, but is often less than $100.
Bottom Line
-
If you are seriously committed to showing Sphynx cats, then expect to pay a price for the privilege. Be sure to check out the cattery and meet the relatives of your kitten to be sure it is not a kitten mill. Any Sphynx kittens listed for less than $500 on the internet, in pet stores or in magazines may be from kitten mills. Although you may be placed on a waiting list, Sphynx kittens sometimes are surrendered to cat rescue groups and animal shelters. If you are interested in the breed only as a companion animal, the wait will be worth it.
